Toast Tuesday Trouble Presents Today's Short Story
A Healthy Movement: A Short Story about Asparagus

Asparagus is a native plant from the Eastern Mediterranean area and Asia,  and the Romans were the ones to first cultivate it. The cultivation of this plant started over 2,000 years ago. The Romans loved asparagus due to its tender and delicious edible shoots. Asparagus also had a unique flavor and was great in medicinal purposes. In the 16th century, asparagus became popular not only with the Romans, but with the French as well. The French colonists brought this plant into the Americas, because they enjoyed it as much as the Romans.

Did you know that asparagus is often  called "the food of kings"? They call it like this because King Louis XIV loved asparagus, and ordered his servants to build a special greenhouse dedicated to the cultivation of asparagus just for himself. Many other kings through history enjoyed asparagus as well, one of them being Julius Caesar. Due to this name given, asparagus started to be considered elegant and if you ate it, you were definitely wealthy.

Today, asparagus is still loved for its unique flavor and its versatility. It's also loved by food lovers around the world because of its health-giving properties. Many famous restaurants and chefs use asparagus as a dish decorator, and sometimes even as the main dish itself.
